Happy To Be A Townie...

On Monday, March 15, 2010, it dawned on me that I’ve never been happier to live in the Town of Sheboygan. Quick clarification for those who may not know; in Wisconsin, there are quite a few places that have both City’s and Town’s. In Sheboygan County there are several with both distinctions (Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls, Plymouth), and the respective City’s provide their own services such as Public Works, Police, Fire & so on, while the Town’s rely on the County to provide most of their service needs. At any rate, back to my original point…I’m a townie now, which means in my time of need, the County will come to my rescue.

And after watching the way the City of Sheboygan’s Common Council has been behaving as of late, thank goodness all I have to do is report on them, not rely on their for my well-being. The Coup-de-grace came Monday night when the Council, in their infinite wisdom, thought it would be a great idea to NOT authorize the hiring of four firefighter/paramedics to replace eight retirees. That’s right, the Council thought it would be better to not replace HALF the openings. Now for the fire department to balance their budget, they will be forced to close a fire station & shut down an ambulance. Not only did the Council fail to provide the department with the resources they need to function properly, the Council members, who all live in the City of Sheboygan, have no ensured that the quality of service the department provides will drop. And that’s no knock on the FD & how they do things. The reality is, they now have to deal with providing service to a large portion of the City with diminished resources.

I feel for the members of the fire department. They risk their lives & rush into situations most people run from. They should be lauded as heroes, instead ill-formed wanna be politicians have turned their bravery into political grandstanding. That’s right, I’m talking to you Alderman Tom Bowers. Every time you talk, every single person in the room cringes. And to make matters worse, the things you say are rambling, incoherent, non-sensical & not even remotely close to being based in any sort of rationale line of thinking. I hate to play the age card, but seriously, if you wanted a retirement hobby you should’ve taken up golf or bridge or anything but city government. You don’t get it and even worse you don’t wanna get it...

So thankfully I live in the Town of Sheboygan now, for the simple fact that this Council is not my government. The only HUGE negative of being a townie is that I won’t be getting the high quality of service the fire, police & other departments provide. Because those people, not the politicians, who do their jobs, bust their asses & put in an honest days work are on the frontlines. They take all the criticism & are the pubic whipping boys, while you beat your drum. That’s garbage & you should be ashamed of yourselves.

You better hope your actions don’t cause any unnecessary deaths. What’s the price of the safety of the residents (TAXPAYERS) in the City of Sheboygan? Apparently it’s four firefighter/paramedics & one fire station. How do you sleep at night?
