The Only Thing That's For Sure Is That Nothing's For Sure
"Some things are true whether or not you believe in them" Dennis Franz 'City of Angels'
Webster's defines fate as "the universal principle or ultimate agency by which the order of things is presumably prescribed; the decreed cause of events; he universal principle or ultimate agency by which the order of things is presumably prescribed; the decreed cause of events; that which is inevitably predetermined; destiny."
How much emphasis can you place on signs? What is coincidence & what is divine intervention? Do real men make their own luck, as Billy Zane stated in 'Titanic'? Or are things out of our control & we are just along for the ride?
Some people believe that no matter what they do, they don't really have a choice. That their choices are in fact the pre-determined role they have been assigned in life. What they are doing is in fact what they are supposed to be doing, no matter what happens. For example, say you go to Starbucks this morning for a latte, well that was decided long before you made the "choice" to head to Starbucks.
Still others believe that everything is yet to be decided. That every choice has a reaction, which causes your path to alter, based on every choice you've made. For example, say you decide to go to Starbucks this morning for a latte, well when you decide you want one, that choice that isn't made until you make it. Everything that happens from that point on in your life is a direct result of going to Starbucks. Get a parking ticket while there, then you have to go to court or just pay the fine, then you may not go to that Starbucks ever again because you're so upset & so on…
But which is right & which is wrong? Or is there a middle ground to be found? Maybe you have the freedom to decide what coffee you want in the morning, but you have no control over whom you fall in love with?
The exact nature of fate, what could happen, what's meant to be, etc is entirely a personal belief. You can choose to believe that something happening is in fact a sign of destiny or that it nothing more than a simple stroke of luck. Maybe the fact that you can choose to believe what you want is a sign that each person can create their own future.
Up until this point, this has been very generic & basic. Maybe I don't want to anger anyone on either side of the aisle regarding what they believe. And unless you're hurting someone with your beliefs, I will never criticize anyone for what they believe in. The hardest thing to do in the world is believe in something & then stand behind those beliefs.
But for me, everything happens for a reason. Sometimes those reasons are great & sometimes they are horrible, but nonetheless they happen. And so be it. You roll with the punches, when life hands you lemons, etc. I've always felt things are done with purpose. And call me vain, but I feel like I'm destined to something special. Maybe it means to change or save the world. Maybe it just means I'll find that one person to love with all that I have.
What's meant to be will always find a way...
